Detroit Metal City is Studio 4°C’s latest work. Boy, is it deliciously insane. From the bizarre (and possibly intentional?) low-budget comic-esque animation style to the home movie-ish camera panning to the sudden maniacal shifts in the 13-minute piece’s animation, this is all absolutely bonkers in every way imaginable. This crazy style gives the episode a decidely un-anime look in most scenes. I could see DMC being shown alongside Metalocalypse easily.
There’s even a scene where the protagonist, Soichi, as his “Johannes Krauser II” alias complete with obligatory metal personality and costume, hits a police officer over the head with his guitar. Even better, the main character’s voice and seiyuu (to Yuji Ueda, in a brilliant role) switches when he takes on his musical persona. This is used to hilarious effect when Soichi scares his potential love interest away in front of his fans.
I wish there could be next episode of this LSD-laced OVA. Too bad.

This was incredibly awesome. Can’t wait for the rest of the series. It should come out as a series of 24 mini-episodes, 5 minutes each. DVD only, on August 23 if I’m not wrong.
