As I mentioned earlier, I am holding Otakon’s first-ever Touhou panel (“Lesbians, Lolis, Vampires and Drunkards: Welcome to Touhou”) with other like-minded Touhou fans this year. The set time and place is 6-7PM on Friday, August 8th in Panel 1. I’m betting I can count on many of you to be help me fill Panel 1 to capacity for this glorious event.
I hope you can be all be there to witness anime convention history with Otakon’s first-ever Touhou panel! We have some fine cute lolita curtain fire danmaku slutbiri youkai vampire doujin nicovid action for your entertainment. And I still have that standing offer to help me Touhou hijack the con, either solo or as a hilarious team effort.
A retelling of the first Nanoha series as a movie? Winter 2008? New barrier jackets for Fate and Nanoha? Female Bardiche seiyuu (!)? Oh yeah, I’m there. I’m painfully hard at the possibilities in this new magical befriending venture that, thankfully, has absolutely nothing to do with the godawful StrikerS. I happen to be painfully hard for more Fate love at the same time.
Now all I need is the announcement that Shinbo is in and confirmation of the rumor that Production IG is behind this. I haven’t cared for IG’s work in the past few years, but they’re much more consistent than Seven Arcs. I believe it’s time for the franchise to get a fresh start with a new studio.
Maybe the fact that the film’s named “Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 1st” is a sign that an A’s retelling comes next? I hope so.
I was bored tonight and decided to re-watch some episodes of the old Battle Programmer Shirase. Why aren’t there more series like this? Shows that don’t care that they’re unrealistically wacky, formulaic, and proud of it. BPS has the best premise ever and isn’t afraid to flaunt it. What’s better than a so-called hacker who can blow up computers with his cell phone?
Also, Misao. Mau mau, indeed. I wish I had a 12 year old niece who would joyfully watch me type away at my laptop.
Too bad there’s never going to be that implied second season.
Unlike the naysayers, I’ve enjoyed the majority of Shugo Chara, with and without the filler. Sure, we’ve had some rough spots (the recent string of fillers was very
), yet I see Shugo Chara as the best pure magical girl series since Cardcaptor Sakura.
Some are forgetting how much CCS and other magical girl favorites have differed from their source material. If anything, Shugo Chara’s more faithful in certain areas than some adaptions have been in the past. And what’s wrong with a TV series complementing the manga? Besides, I love seeing the best scenes from the comic animated.
That’s why I’m ecstatic when I hear a second season has been greenlight. Another year of Amu’s adorable life and magical girl adventures with Ikuto and her friends? Two or three new cute openings? Yes, please. I’ll watch it alone for new Amu outfits.
I almost wish the next season could be directed by Kou Matsuo and the animation done by Nomad, so we could see a darker latter half of the series. Sadly, this can’t happen.
Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is Joss Whedon’s, of Buffy and Firefly fame, latest pet project. It’s a superhero romance-comedy musical in three 13-15 minute acts, streaming online at their site until July 20th or purchasable at $4 for the entire “season” on the dreaded iTunes. An extras-filled DVD will be coming in the next few months. It’s particularly notable that this is completely an internet effort, from the viewing to the promotion, that Whedon worked on during the writer’s strike.
Dr. Horrible stars Neil Patrick Harris as the title character, Billy (alias Dr. Horrible), a mad scientist living a double life, while pining for his dream girl’s (Felicia Day) attention and attempting to join the Evil League of Evil, the obligatory anti-Justice League of this bizarro universe. In Dr. Horrible, superheroes and supervillains are normal part of society. Our protagonist has a nemesis in the form of the faux-heroic Captain Hammer, played by Nathan Fillion. Hammer is everything Dr. Horrible is not, from his strength to his popularity to his success.
At first, I was happy to finally see Nathan Fillion in an effort that could be successful, but the real star of the show is Neil Patrick Harris. Not only is he a very capable singer, yet he plays the role of our title character with an endearing dorky charm. Nathan Fillion plays Captain Hammer’s arrogance and crudeness to the boot in very amusing fashion with lines such as, “The hammer is my penis”. Felicia Day fits the role and shows that she’s been sorely underused on network television.
The songs have the typical Joss Whedon wittiness to them, though not to the extent of Firefly’s quips, so it works not to overpower the show. Not that Firefly was hurt by its dialogue; the exact opposite happens to be true, but it wouldn’t have worked as well here. It’s quite entertaining seeing a nerdy premise crossed with musical cliches. The characters even break out into song at the correct moments!
I’ll highly recommend Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog to everyone on our fine internets. Go watch it as soon as possible. If you love this as much as I do, support efforts like this, by buying the episodes (if you use iTunes), and/or purchasing the DVD in a few months.
